I am deeply saddened to hear of the passing of Bruce. He was such a great guy, always welcoming and friendly, full of good stories and a great host. He also enjoyed barbequing and one story I recall was when Pat and Bruce visited my mom on Vancouver Island and I was there. We decided to have a sea food feast so got lots of clams, oysters, prawns and, of course, a large fresh salmon. Bruce insisted we barbeque it on a cedar plank which was something new to me. Well where does one find a cedar plank in Parksville on a Sunday when everything was closed? Not a problem as we went our cruising around till we found a lot somewhere in town and captured the prized cedar plank, which Bruce proceeded to soak and then barbeque a fantastic salmon on it. What I remember most was the laughs we had on our adventure to find the plank, althought the feast was also great. Thats what I remember most about Bruce - such a fun loving, friendly guy who always welcomed me into his family.
We will miss you deeply Bruce. You have been a great cousin to me.
Your cousin Graeme Phipps

I remember when a group of us got together to have the 1st deep fried turkey weekend in Sundry. Everything was set ready to go. Turkey was injected with flavoring, oil was heating up, turkey was tethered to the stick (used to put the turkey in and out of the oil) and everything seemed so easy, until it was time to put the turkey into the oil. As the turkey was lowered, everyone started to panic that there was too much oil for the size of the turkey, we were in a forest, would the oil overflow and catch everything on fire? I remember looking at Bruce and he was the most calm of eveyone! When the turkey was finally placed into the oil with little spillage, all you had to do was look at Bruce and you knew it was like an engineer executed his well laid plan. It was the best deep fried turkey I ever had with great friends.
Bruce was always happy, calm, loved a challenge and new adventures and he always had me laughing with his quick wit. I will miss his words of wisdom.

I had the pleasure of working with Bruce in the early 80's at Strathcona W/C . It was located on 83 Ave & 104 St and we worked in the newer half of the building that contained the SP1 Centrex equipment. Bruce had the patience of a Saint showing me the ropes in this new high tech equipment. Most of this equipment handled the UofA and the UofA hospital so it was important to keep on top of troubles. Bruce had a great manner dealing with all the contacts at the UofA to maintain a great relationship between them. During our time working together we enjoyed many of the same things, hunting, fishing, and eating! Bruce, and lots of us at the time enjoyed phoning our breakfast orders over to Lee's Restaurant and slipping across the alley and into the back door of the restaurant and picking up a great meal to start the day! Bruce wore these cowboy boots around the office and after a couple years of telling me how comfortable they were to wear on those tiled floors I bought a pair! I still remember the day Bruce brought in a handful of flowers. I said what are those for... He said "for you "... Me! Yeah,Sarah (his very young daughter) had picked them just for me ...they were Bachelor Bottons. Made it another great day to work with Bruce!

I am so saddened by this as this was quite the shock to me. I was speaking to him not so long ago and he never mentioned a thing. Perhaps a testament to his character. I can't make the trip for the funeral on Monday. My condolences to Pat.
Bruce was a good friend and I will miss what he brought to my life as I'm sure each of you has memories of him that are near and dear to you. I will miss him as we had some great times together fishing after he retired and I always enjoyed his unique views on many things and the kindness of his heart. Not to mention he was the 1st Mayor that I actually enjoyed listening to, not only in how he got the job but what he did while he was the mayor.
With fond memories, here's to you Bruce

Having had the pleasure of working and playing with Bruce I quickly came to appreciate his many gifts and talents. Never one to step back from a challenge at work, he jumped at the opportunity to become the go-to guy in our cellular industry and excelled through his generosity of serving and training others. Equally passionate at play, he would come out to join the boys in several rounds of golf on a 3 or 4 day weekend, all the while not really liking golf, but enjoying the people, the comradery, the generous meals and the many laughs and stories. The one thing though that he did best, was share stories and speak highly of his wife Pat, his sons Brian and Dan and his daughter Sarah. He will surely be missed by the many, many individuals that knew and loved him, along with all those that he served. A journey without exception Bruce, well played Bro!

Worked with Bruce at ED-TEL in the 70's at Strathcona wire centre, that was the first long haul place of employment for me. Put in about 5 years there in a dimmly lit fortress with few windows and a bIack checkered floor, the building had the remnants of bank cleaning fluid and dag. Amongst all this gloominess, Bruce was a bright spot, always a smile and a story to tell. I remember the times we would book a vacation day in the middle of winter, pack up the ice auger, hooks, parkas head out northeast of Edmonton and spend the day ice fishing. I am sure it was Bruce's luck, we always came back with our limit and spent the rest of the evening preparing filets for the freezer. Hard to find a kinder and more patient guy than Bruce.
