Obituary of Donald Lunty

Don was born in Galahad on December 16, 1954, the second son in the family of Lindy and Irna Lunty. He passed away at the University of Alberta Hospital on January 3rd, 2015 with his family by his side. After completing his education at Forestburg School in 1973, Don attended the University of Alberta, where he received his degree in Agriculture. While attending the U of A, Don met Debra McNaughton from Strome, who was attending the Nursing program. They were married at Killam, Alberta on August 20th, 1977. To this union four children were born: Kevin, Susan, Steven, and Shannon. Don and Debra initially lived in Daysland, moved to Forestburg to be closer to the farm in 1980, and moved to the farm in 1985. Farming and agriculture were a large part of Don's life. After graduating from university he worked for a herbicide company. The family farm called him back in 1980 where he worked with his father, Lindy, until Lindy's passing in 2004. Don farmed until this spring, when his illness forced him to retire. During his last year of farming, Don was thankful for all of his family and neighbors who worked closely with him to get all of the work done. Don was active in the farming community, serving as an Alberta Wheat Pool Delegate and later as an Agricore Director. Don was always there for his children and was involved with them in their activities, including coaching minor hockey, basketball, and skiing. Don actively participated in the Forestburg community, including the Lions Club, Golf Club, Curling Club, and the Valley Ski Hill. Don is survived by his wife of 37 years, Debra; his children, Kevin, Susan (Wade), Steven (Michelle), and Shannon (Tyrone); and eight grandchildren, Kurtis, Shawn, Luke, Brooke, Skyler, Aaron, Michael, and Finley. He also leaves his mother, Irna and his brother, Doug (Dianne); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles. Don was predeceased by his father, Lindy; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Mary McNaughton; his sister-in-law Donna Brodie; and numerous other family members and friends. Don's family is very thankful for the support of family, friends, and the community during this difficult time. We are also grateful for the care provided to Don by the Daysland and UofA Hospitals, Cross Cancer Institute, Home Care Nurses and AHS EMS throughout his journey and during his final days. Don is in our hearts, our minds, and our souls. He was a bright light that has gone missing from our lives. A Celebration of Don's life will be held at the Forestburg Community Hall on Thursday, January 8th, 2015 at 2:00 pm. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
