I met Dick in the late 1960s when our family moved to Sedgewick from Calgary. I was a teenager then, and Dick was immediately and always friendly and approachable, with something positive to add to every conversation and encounter, even with a teenager! Dick and my dad, Bob Hansen, knew each other as friends and members of the community for forty-seven years. Bob died last October, and Dick and Mert came down from Camrose for the service. They used to live across the alley from Bob and Gerrie in Sedgewick, and in recent years Dick would come to the house often to play forty or fifty hands of crib with Bob. I met Dick in 1968 and saw him last summer when the three of us played some crib at the dining room table and Bob and Dick took my loonies for the last time. They were born in the same year, 1931, and they died seven months apart. We lost two good old timers in Bob and Dick, good citizens and gentlemen of the old school. My condolences, and my mother’s, to Mert and the “kids” and all the Matthews family.
