Obituary of John Garfield Mills
John Garfield Mills, 75, passed peacefully in his sleep with his family close by on June 26, 2016 in Killam Alberta.
He leaves his wife Shirley (Wittenberg) Mills; his son Jonathon Mills (Kristina); his daughter Becky Johnson (James); his grandchildren Julie-Anna Stenhouse (Dale), Anthony Stenhouse; step-granddaughter Hailey Johnson; and many close friends.
Born to John Richard Mills and Vera Comley on May 1st, 1941, John was born and raised in Saint Johns New Brunswick.
In his early years, John worked for Laura Secord making candy. Black licorice and caramel toffee being some of his favorites.
Later, John would move to Ontario where he met his wife Shirley. Together they ran a group home for foster children in Markham Ontario. They would move to Alberta to be closer to Shirley’s family in 1977. John worked for the Charles Camsell Hospital until it closed and moved onto the Royal Alexandra Hospital until he retired. Following retirement, John dedicated 15 years to volunteering at both the Royal Alex and Cardiac Institute. In 2012, John moved to Hardisty to be closer to his daughter and grandchildren and as he fondly stated, to enjoy the countryside. Throughout his life John remained an avid music and film enthusiast.
