Obituary of Virginia Ley

It is with much sadness that we announce the death of Virginia (Ginny) Ley of Killam on July 12, 2024.  She passed away peacefully at home surrounded by family.  She lived 86 good years.  She spent 48 happy years married to Robert Ley, who predeceased her in 2005.  The day she met him she told her best friend he was the man she was going to marry.  She was a good judge of character.  She raised four children (Linda, James, Debbie and Lisa) who know how lucky they are to have had her for their mother.  She had 4 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren.  They all call her GiGi-Ma, and adore her.

In the early 1960s Bob and Ginny were travelling across Canada upgrading telephone offices for Northern Electric.  Their children were approaching school age, so the nomadic lifestyle had to end.  Alberta Government Telephones (now Telus) was hiring, and offered Bob a position in either Killam or Sedgewick.  They laughingly declared Sedgewick the winner and moved to Killam.  In her last days, Ginny mentioned several times that she wanted the people of Killam to know how grateful she was they made that choice.  She loved her great friends and neighbours, and the spirit and connectedness of this community.  In her spirit, do something kind for a neighbour today.

At Ginny’s request, there will be no formal funeral service held.  Instead, a private family and friends gathering will be held at a later date, in conjunction with her interment.

In lieu of flowers, donations to charities supported by Ginny will be appreciated.  These include Dogs With Wings, the Killam Food Bank, and 100 Women of Flagstaff.  The last of these can be donated through the Battle River Community Foundation, specifying it be directed to the 100 Women of Flagstaff group.
